Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is a mountain town and ski destination in the French Alps, at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif and close to Switzerland and Italy. Its identity is closely tied to mountaineering, glaciers and steep alpine terrain. Skiing is spread across several areas along the valley, each with a different landscape and character.
Brévent–Flégère offers open slopes and striking views across to Mont Blanc. The Grands Montets sector above Argentière is associated with north-facing terrain, demanding skiing and freeriding. Balme, reached from Le Tour or Vallorcine, offers open mountain pastures and broad valley views, while Les Houches–Saint-Gervais is particularly suited to family skiing. Dedicated learning areas, including La Vormaine and Le Tourchet, also give beginners options away from the more challenging mountain terrain.
The Vallée Blanche is one of Chamonix’s best-known experiences: an approximately 20 km off-piste glacier itinerary reached from the Aiguille du Midi. It is neither a groomed nor a marked piste, and its accessibility depends on mountain conditions. The tourist office strongly recommends a qualified mountain guide because of the glacier environment and its hazards.
The Aiguille du Midi and the historic Montenvers railway also make Chamonix a destination for mountain sightseeing. Because the ski sectors occupy different slopes and elevations, conditions can vary substantially across the valley. Check the forecast at the elevation you plan to visit, together with current lift and piste openings.
